Nashville TN Birth Rate Climbs - More People to Live in the Nashville TN Real Estate Market

Nashville’s birth rate is more than 10% above the national and state averages…what’s causing this baby boom? No one knows! But area hospitals are expanding their labor and delivery rooms to accommodate this increase.

5 years ago, the State of Tennessee projected 80,424 babies to be born in 2007. But the actual number was 86,661, of which 9,991 were born to Davidson County residents.

In 2009, Vanderbilt will break ground on an 8-story, 340,000 sq. ft. addition to the Children’s Hospital. This addition will offer almost 20 new labor and delivery rooms, three dozen obstetrical beds and 75-100 pediatric beds. The $203,000 million building is expected to be completed in 2012.

All this being said, there are some hospitals getting out of the labor and delivery business because of the increasing cost of malpractice insurance.

The overall 2007 birth rate for Tennessee was 69.2% - but Davidson County saw an 80.8% rate…up from 64.4% in 2000.

St. Thomas Hospital is also building a new facility for Middle Tennessee Medical that will accommodate 3,000 births per year.

Will the current economic situation cause this birth rate to drop? Possibly! The downturn in the economy could mean that people will wait to have children. However, with so many people moving into the Nashville TN Real Estate market - we expect the birth rates to continue to climb.
